7th World Congress On Environment Management
A Report

The 7th World Congress on Environment Management called for an all out effort to focus on good governance for sustainable development on the planet. It emphasized that poverty is not the cause of environmental degradation but is an effect of the same. Poverty alleviation and environmental protection were projected as two major issues that need to be tackled in tandem and not in isolation. Good governance emphasizing involvement of the state, including government and judiciary, corporates, citizens groups and NGOs can alone lead to sustainable development.

Dr. Ola Ullsten, former Prime Minister of Sweden, inaugurated the 7th World Congress on Environment Management organized on June 10 - 12, 2005 at Palampur with the theme 'Governance for Sustainable Development'. It was attended by over 300 participants from the industry, government, NGOs and other sectors. Overseas participants included countries such as Pakistan, Srilanka, Nepal, Bangladesh, Uganda, Netherlands, Canada & USA. The representatives of USAID and Indo German Foundation also participated. Over 100 experts and business representatives made presentations during its 21 sessions.
In his message to the Congress organizers HE Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, the President of India, stated that he was "happy to know that the World Environment Foundation, New Delhi is organizing the 7th World Congress on Environment Management at S M Convention Centre, Palampur on 10-12 June, 2005 and wish the congress all success".
